Bourchier Street Primary School has an aspiration to shift from traditional teaching to a more collaborative approach. To support this, FPPV designed a new mixed learning space for the foundation classes.
The project involved the partial demolition of an existing building and construction of the new learning space. The central space consists of an open learning area for two classes, semi-private withdrawal spaces and shared wet area facilities.
A semi-open space looks out over the withdrawal areas, providing a level of passive supervision. Finally, a fourth learning area has a large sliding door that allows for complete separation, as required. Externally-accessed junior toilets are located adjacent to the play area. The building opens onto external learning, with a key aspect of the project being lowering the floor level for better access and to set the level for future stages.
