The former courthouse in Northcote required expansion and upgrades to support VAEAI’s crucial role in addressing the educational needs and interests of Koorie students across all levels of education in Victoria. The project included a first-floor addition over the west side of the building while preserving the heritage facade, modifications to the rear carpark to enhance connectivity to the adjacent community outdoor space, and general internal upgrades.
To repurpose the former Northcote Courthouse, the building underwent both interior refurbishment and an extension. FPPV collaborated with VAEAI, starting with a business case to understand the functional and cultural requirements. Given the site's limitations and the building's heritage status, extensive town planning was necessary. However, all parties worked together to achieve optimal outcomes within the planning scheme.
The heritage characteristics of the building's front were maintained, with simple forms added to provide access and identity. An addition at the back and a second storey to the back and side accommodate several groups working within the space to support Aboriginal education at all levels. Internally, the building was completely reworked to include reception, meeting rooms, a conference centre, new stairs, utility and storage areas, offices, and three open staff workspaces.
Cultural and spiritual references are intricately woven throughout the design, significantly influencing the overall aesthetic. The land is represented in every space, from the Yellow Box tree branching through the corridor to the vital river depicted in the custom glazing film. Flooring and paving inside and out reference the earth, and views and vistas to the landscape have been maximized.
This redevelopment project successfully blends historical preservation with modern functionality, creating a space that honors cultural heritage while providing contemporary amenities to support the educational mission of VAEAI.
