FPPV were engaged to undertake assessment masterplanning of several regional offices for the then Department of Sustainability and Environment. During the masterplanning process at the Bendigo facility, it was decided that a new canteen should be built instead of converting existing valuable office space. The new break-out space is at the centre of the facility, providing a focus for staff movement.

The building uses intelligent solar passive design with active air movement control, including a solar chimney, to provide a relaxed and airy environment, warm in winter and cool in summer.

Large pieces of local Harcourt granite incorporated in the west wall contribute to internal mass and add to the ambiance of the space. The building also pays respect to local indigenous people, who were consulted throughout the design and building process.

The landscape design was inspired by possum skin rugs and uses local materials and the placement of existing ceremonial poles to give the courtyard spaces unique atmosphere.
