The Dialogue in the Dark project offered a unique and immersive experience, guiding participants through a series of tactile spaces representing iconic Melbourne locations, all in complete darkness. Led by a guide with a vision impairment, participants navigated through a park, Queen Vic Market, crossed a street, caught a tram, and visited a café. This journey provided a profound understanding of the daily challenges faced by individuals with little to no vision.
FPPV Architecture played a crucial role in coordinating the complex fitout, overcoming numerous technical challenges to ensure compliance with regulations and the maintenance of total darkness. Special considerations were given to the operation of services and warning systems, ensuring a safe and seamless experience for all participants.
Collaboration was key to the project's success. Close cooperation between the client, contractor, and architect allowed for real-time design decisions during construction, enhancing the overall experience. Unique and unusual fixtures, fittings, and finishes were incorporated, with the tram being a particularly interesting element to procure.
The project also featured an interactive and layered façade that played on the concepts of darkness and vision, with signage integrated into a perforated screen of braille. This design element not only added to the aesthetic appeal but also reinforced the project's theme.
As an event partner, FPPV Architecture assisted in adapting the Dialogue in the Dark concept for a local audience and bringing it to life. The fitout included a seminar room that could operate in both light and dark modes, with an acoustic operable wall that opened onto the lobby, providing flexibility for various events and activities.
Overall, the Dialogue in the Dark project successfully combined innovative design with a powerful educational experience, offering participants a deeper appreciation of the experiences of those with vision impairments.
