Leading up to the centenary of the blessing of its foundation stone, Shepparton’s beloved heritage church underwent a thoughtful restoration to preserve its legacy while enhancing accessibility and functionality for future generations. Having played a central role in the community’s key moments, this landmark was carefully refurbished to ensure its continued place in local life.
The project included critical repairs to the slate roof, with deteriorated slates, gutters, and flashings replaced to secure the building’s integrity. The magnificent rose leadlight window was restored, reinforcing its structure and extending its lifespan. Rising damp and structural movement of flooring and walls were addressed, securing the foundation of the church. Hard plaster, timberwork, mouldings, and deteriorated brickwork were carefully repaired, reviving the craftsmanship that defined the church’s historic character.
Inside, upgrades to the sanctuary accommodated modern liturgical practices, improving accessibility and visibility of the altar. The Narthex was expanded with a refined glass partition, creating a welcoming gathering space, while new glass foyers at key entrances introduced airlocks for climate control, compliant stair and ramp access, and a considered contrast between contemporary elements and the church’s heritage fabric.
Through this restoration, Shepparton’s cherished church remained a place of faith, reflection, and community—honouring its storied past while meeting the needs of today and tomorrow.
