The Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Research, a government-run centre for applied ecological research, has been a cornerstone of environmental science at its Heidelberg facility for over 40 years. The acquisition of an adjacent tennis club prompted FPPV Architecture to embark on a comprehensive masterplanning project.
Collaborating closely with administration staff and scientists, FPPV developed a deep understanding of the diverse needs of each group and space. Spanning five distinct projects, the work included everything from site master planning to specialized upgrades for the Aquarium, a critical facility for breeding endangered species like the Galaxiids.
The main building works required innovative site assessments and alterations, resulting in the construction of a new Meeting/Conference Room and a more accessible Entry Foyer. Additionally, a new Boat Maintenance Shed was built, and an existing shed was transformed into a modern Library. These new and upgraded facilities incorporate state-of-the-art sustainability and accessibility solutions, enhancing the functionality and longevity of the aging building stock.
