The redevelopment of the Jock Austin Pavilion at Doug Nicholls Reserve was undertaken to meet the growing needs of the Fitzroy Stars Football and Netball Clubs, with a particular focus on creating inclusive and contemporary facilities. A key objective of the project was to ensure the pavilion would be suitable for female football teams, addressing long-standing issues around accessibility, privacy, and functionality in the original structure.
The design included a range of upgrades and additions to both improve user experience and enhance the building’s overall usability. A new on-ground concrete slab allowed for the extension of the existing kiosk, while a new open-sided balcony was added to the spectator area. Safety rails were also installed along the existing stepped seating to increase accessibility and security for spectators.
Internally, the pavilion underwent a complete refurbishment. The outdated facilities, which included open showers and minimal privacy screening, were replaced with modern change rooms equipped with lockers and benches. Additional facilities such as new bathrooms, a training room with tiered seating, and an ice room were introduced to support athlete preparation and recovery, ensuring the space could support both male and female teams to a high standard.
The site presented significant environmental challenges due to its location on partially capped landfill. This required careful planning and the involvement of specialist consultants. Key remediation works included the removal of contaminated soil and the installation of vapour mitigation systems beneath new concrete slabs. Every stage of construction was undertaken with environmental compliance in mind, ensuring the integrity of the landfill cap was maintained.
