The New Hope Baptist Church Masterplan was a visionary project for a prominent corner site in Blackburn. FPPV, having previously designed the 450-seat auditorium in 2004, embarked on an ambitious plan to upgrade and expand the facilities to better serve the community.
The masterplan aimed to increase the auditorium's capacity to 1000 seats, making it a versatile space for both congregational use and conferences. In addition to the auditorium, the plan included enhanced facilities for counseling, childcare services, and a dedicated smaller chapel. A central internal 'street' connected the site to its surroundings, facilitating easy access and visual connectivity between the various spaces, creating a vibrant community hub.
The precinct was designed to provide significant community resources, and the City of Whitehorse consistently supported the Town Planning applications for this site. The second stage of the masterplan, completed in 2018, involved extending and upgrading the existing auditorium with an additional 350 seats. This stage also included connections to the upgraded kindergarten, a new community kitchen with associated decks, external access, and the reorganization of several spaces to bridge this and future stages.
The New Hope Baptist Church project was developed through extensive engagement with multiple stakeholders, including community outreach organizations, childcare and kindergarten operators, café management, and various site-based charities. FPPV also designed flexible spaces suited for a range of community uses and outreach services, ensuring the development met the diverse needs of the community.
Many of New Hope's programs and functions were government and council-funded, making this development a genuine community facility and function center of choice for numerous organizations. The New Hope Baptist Church now stands as a testament to FPPV's commitment to creating inclusive, functional, and vibrant community spaces.
