The Olympia Housing Initiative transformed outdated public housing across Heidelberg West, Heidelberg Heights, and Bellfield, delivering sustainable, high-quality residences that met modern standards of accessibility, security, and maintainability. Designed to optimize residential density while respecting planning controls and the surrounding streetscape, the project balanced economic feasibility with thoughtful urban integration.
A diverse mix of single and double-story dwellings addressed community needs, ensuring secure, cost-effective, and adaptable housing solutions. The redevelopment of Skeffington Street reimagined a dual-title site with four family townhouses, each offering three bedrooms across two levels. A ground-floor bedroom, accessible toilet, and barrier-free circulation provided an inclusive living environment for families with disabilities. Materials and façade variations subtly reflected the neighbourhood’s architectural rhythm, maintaining a cohesive yet individualized presence.
Bonar Street, Ebony Parade, and Haig Street followed a unified design approach, integrating consistent materiality and form while adapting density and spatial configurations to each site. Bonar and Haig Streets featured two double-story family homes at the front—each with three bedrooms, open-plan living, private gardens, and dual parking—while a single-story accessible dwelling at the rear ensured equitable living options. Ebony Parade adopted a similar framework, with double-story two-bedroom units replacing the larger family configurations, offering a compact yet functional alternative within the broader housing strategy.
Together, these developments enhanced liveability, inclusivity, and responsive urban design, strengthening the social fabric of the Heidelberg community and setting a new benchmark for public housing redevelopment.
