In 2007, FPPV was commissioned to undertake alterations, additions and refurbishment to the existing Modernist era 1960s Church. In 2008, after tendering the project and the departure of Rev Vincent Long PP to Rome, the Parish put the project on hold and explored the possibility of demolition under the local planning scheme heritage overlay, with a view to building a new church. This approach was unsuccessful and the Parish decided to review the project brief.
In 2014, FPPV was again engaged by the Parish to undertake major refurbishment to the church, to provide a new home for the congregation. The original church building had been subjected to a series of renovations and lost much of its design aesthetic. By stripping away the renovations, strategically pushing outward from the original façade and reorienting the church, FPPV provided a contemporary facility for the extensive congregation while revealing and emphasising the beauty of the original building.
The existing timber floor and pews have been refurbished and add warmth to the large open space. Custom designed carpet and joinery add colour, while the traditionally styled Sanctuary lends weight and focus to the space. Liturgical items, designed and procured by the congregation, reflect the vision of the parish. The refurbishment also incorporates a complete audio visual system, new facilities for the priests, altar servers and helpers, a new piety stall, and integration of stained glass windows and existing statues. The addition of a Narthex and large verandah connects the church with the existing Parish Centre and allows the spaces to be used throughout the year.
The St Joseph’s Church redevelopment involved reinstating the original heritage listed 1960’s Modernist character of the church whilst providing facilities for contemporary liturgical requirements. The design is effectively a re-birth of the building including a re-orientation of the entry, alter and sanctuary. An unsympathetic entry addition was also removed to introduce a covered processional entry for weddings and funerals.
